Socrative

This is my new favorite App/Website is called Socrative. This tool allows you to create multiple choice or open ended questions. It gathers the information and then creates a page with results!!!

I used this last week at a Math Center. Students had to answer open ended math questions! Be careful with open ended as you have to make sure you come up with all the possible correct answers!

It took me about 10 minute to create a 10 question quiz. You can even upload pictures into the question if there are any diagrams for science they need to see!!

For the results page I was able to see what percentage as a class we got right and who missed the question. You can either have the kids put their name or hide their identity!

Number Pieces App

Currently my students are working on volume! They were given the task to create a greenhouse for the school. The greenhouse had to have a volume of 900 ft cubed or 100 ft cubed.

Students used AwwApp to create a list of their dimensions and a 3-D version of the greenhouse.

Next using the NUMBER PIECES app, the student used base 10 pieces to great a net. A net is a 2-D version of a 3-D box.

The NUMBER PIECES App on the school IPads are great for anything with place value!!! We also used it during our strategy to group to demonstrate dividing a whole number by a decimal!

Volume Word Problems

VOLUME....Students wrote their own volume word problems.  They then used manipulatives  to show their answers and recorded how to solve the problems on their devices.  It was a great way to use good 'ole manipulatives and technology!!!  #mixingtheoldwiththenew

Balanced Math Equations with Story Kit and QR Codes

In Math we have been working on "Balanced Math Equations" and understanding the true meaning of the "=" sign.  We brought in digital learning by doing 2 different activities relating to this concept.  The first activity involved having the students use the "StoryKit" app to create a "book" on Balanced Equations.( A big shout out to Mrs. Delia for teaching us this!)  The students learned how to create a title page and then had to create at least 2 other pages in which they had to write equations that were balanced and prove how they knew they were balanced.
After doing this activity, the students were asked to take a true/false quiz that I created using QR codes.  The students scanned the QR codes using the QuickScan app.  They had an answer sheet to record on. An example of a question:  3 + 5 = 6 + 1 is a balanced equation.  The students then had to circle true or false on their answer sheet.
We had a great time using our devices to enhance our learning, and I am excited to create more lessons!

Linoit in 4th grade

We started our unit on fractions today.  As an introduction, I created a Linot for students to finish my sentence of "A fraction is...". It was a very easy way to gauge prior knowledge and see exactly where we needed to start.   We used manipulatives and devices during the lesson.  By the end, students did another Linoit board to show learning of fractions and decomposing a fraction.

Early Release Day - Staff members are tech learners, too!

While our students were home enjoying their time off from school on our 2/13 Early Release Day, BCES staff members Brought Their Own Device to different professional development sessions.  One team's focus was investigating technology tools to help promote students' mastery of math vocabulary.  Mrs. Boylan, Mrs. Carter, Mrs. Collins, Mrs. D'Elia, Mrs. Hunsberger, Ms. Page & Mrs. Shearer had fun learning and brainstorming ways they can use Linoit and the StoryKit app with students.  #lifelonglearners  #technologyrocks

Poll Everywhere

We started fractions on Friday and I used the website Poll Everywhere to ask the students questions. Students went to my page and then typed in answers to my questions. As they did that their responses came up in word clouds. The more they said a word the bigger it got on the screen. We discussed why the words were bigger and how they were important!

Kahoot in First Grade!

Thanks to Mr. Smith's awesome presentation at my BT meeting, I tried out Kahoot as an engaging review for 3D shapes. I created my own quiz but there is also an option to search differing topics.

After students found the browser on their device, all students were able to find "Kahoot (Quiz Launch Page)" on our student links page.  Students then typed in the "game pin" (on SMARTboard) and "nickname" to begin the quiz. It was a great way to check-in with my 1st graders while they were discussing which answer to choose with their group.

Try one out!
